United Methodist Youth Fellowship

Our Youth in Mission

During a recent Youth-in-Mission trip to Omaha, several members of the North Platte United Methodist Youth Fellowship learned to bring about positive change in communities.

Seven high school students with three adult sponsors spent a weekend attending workshops and helping with special projects. Students were Tullen Mabbutt, Jake Joliffe, Kelsie Nichols, Seth Fornander, Sam Fornander, Meshka Waya, and David Brown. Adult sponsors were Dallas Zimmer, Shari Shore, and Greta Leach.

Workshop speakers taught the mission participants how to change communities with gardens, how to use art as mission, how to help homeless people get their lives back on track, and how to achieve justice through mission.

Shore commented, “It was an incredible experience for all of us. We all were changed, and we learned that doing mission work strengthens our love for God and our love for our ‘neighbors.’”

The volunteers worked at the Big Garden site, at the Summer Arts Festival, and at Together, Inc., a non-profit agency that provides food and services for needy people and helps homeless people rebuild their lives.

“It was wonderful to learn about different situations people encounter and about how we take for granted things that others may not have,“ Joliffe said. “We also learned that the mission starts when we come home to spread what we learned and to continue our work at home.”
